The topic in which I am thinking of researching is how many uni students within the media subject play sport, and how that effects their time away from uni, physically, socially and mentally. Ultimately, the goal will be to answer the question of, does sport have an effect on your time away from uni? Why or why not?. This will allow for further thinking to be done by the fellow media students, whilst also discovering why or why not the particular student does or does not play sport based on the reasons given by the participants. It will also be discussed how they feel sport helps with their studies in a positive or negative way.
This topic is relevant as according to Clearinghouse for Sport, 90% of adults participated in sports in 2019 in Australia. Sport is all around us, whether we like it or not and people are constantly engaging with it, therefore it is relevant especially for a nation like Australia which is sport mad!
The research will be achievable as it can all be done through online surveys and through social media polls. This also accounts for the timeliness of the research as it does not take long to collate, observe, read and conduct an answer based on the research which has been created. Therefore, the timeliness of the research can allow for a wider range of research to be conducted for an extensive range of audiences, which is easily achievable through an online presence of research collection.
Based off the Twitter poll that was compiled, more uni students from the small sample size do not play sport than those that do. That is a huge problem, as sport is a great way to socialise, whilst also taking a break from uni work.
A study from the Massachusetts Daily Collegian has indicated that students are becoming more lazy with a study time of 14 hours a week in 2003 as opposed to 24 hours in 1961. My Twitter poll suggests that, and shows that students are even becoming more lazier on a physical level.
There has been some extensive research already done on this topic overseas, and particularly one from Rochester University. This source clearly indicated that there was a positive affirmation between the link of sports and university. Backing up the point that was made in the previous paragraphs. Sport allows for people to relax, work with others and increase energy. This shows that there is an issue being explored, that, more university students should be actively participating in sport in order to feel the emotions other students feel worldwide.
With many sports participating on the weekends, it is an amazing idea to join a club, whether it is a soccer club, a basketball club or a netball club, this is a great way to get fit, whilst being distracted for around 2 hours a week. Leeds University have also indicated how beneficial that is to university students, for both educational and work purposes. This can help students in the long run as they further progress throughout their uni degree.
Ultimately, this research topic is timely, as all the research can be done online, also making it achievable. The research is relevant due to the massive Australian sporting culture, and is further backed up by other studies and sources which further helps the research which will be conducted throughout the semester.
